Greetings and salutations to all. The quick: I'm concerned about the temperatures reported by HWiNFO64 v7.000-4400 with regards to my north M.2 slot (Sam 970 EVO NVME SSD). Under load, it's reporting as high as 82°C ( 179.6°F ). Specs : Intel Core i7-9700k (non-oc) Asus ROG Strix Z390-H 2xSamsung 970 EVO NVME 1TB SSD (PCIex3) Nvidia RTX 2060 Super "Load" : Discord Steam* Game Nvidia Experience AI Suite 3 (fan control) HWiNFO64 v7.000-4400 The Ugly : Recently (2 weeks ago) I noticed that my CPU was running hot, getting up top around 80°C. I figured my AIO was going bad, probably due to permeation as it was 6 years old. Since I was going to change out the AIO, I figured it was time for a new case. Replacing my CoolerMaster HAF (circa 2009) with something that would allow for a front mounted AIO. In the end, I solved my CPU problem, but started to monitor my NVME SSDs temperatures. Although I'd never had a problem with one drive installed on the south port, to use the SATA_0 port for my old (OS) SSD...installing 2 made me wonder about it's position just north of my GPU. Using Samsung Magician to monitor has never given me a warning, but after seeing the higher temps using HWiNFO, I'm starting to worry about killing the drive. The Thought : So, I asked my very few friends that know anything about computers, and we have all concluded that the temps being reported would be the same even if there were no NVME SSD installed. I just wouldn't "see it" because there is nothing populating that M.2 slot. We figured the temp being reported has more to do with motherboard layout and it's proximity to the slot itself. We believe the GPU is "heating" the area. We figured that, based on the exact same drive, but situated south of the GPU is reporting temps within tolerance, and as such, a component that reaches a maximum temp of 55°C (under the same load), cannot possibly contribute to an outrageous 82°C. That would be like expecting a chemical hand warmer to increase the heat of a burning fire. Query : Is the reported ASIC temp accurate (probability)? If it is, will it have a negative effect on the life or performance of the SSD itself? Should it be believed that the temperature, if accurate, would be reported without the use of that north slot? I had a 500GB 970 Evo Plus in the bottom position with no airflow; it would reach high 80s temperatures. I relocated it to the top slot with a heat sink behind the graphics card, where it should be warmer because of its proximity to both the GPU and the CPU. The temperature in the hotter slot with the heat sink stayed below 50°C during the same test. Both Intel and AMD advise against overclocking, so ensure your BIOS settings match their thermal and power guidelines.
