Fixing Witcher 3 crashes?
Hello everyone,
I recently assembled my personal computer—a new experience for me—and everything was progressing smoothly until I began playing The Witcher. The hardware configuration includes an ASUS AM4 TUF Gaming X570-Plus (Wi-Fi) motherboard, a Ryzen 5 3600X processor, an AMD RX 5700-XT THICC III Ultra 8GB graphics card, Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3000 C15 4x8GB memory, an Intel 660p NVMe PCIe M.2 1TB solid-state drive, a Cooler Master MWE Gold Fully Modular 750W power supply, a MasterLiquid ML240L RGB AIO cooler along with additional fans for airflow management, and Windows 10 64-bit.
I started playing The Witcher a few days ago at maximum settings, which functioned flawlessly for approximately 15 hours. Suddenly, the game began freezing randomly, most frequently when accessing the inventory menu, requiring me to restart my computer. Occasionally, the screen turns black, but audio and music continue playing through my speakers. Once, during a cutscene’s introduction, the entire game terminated and reverted to the desktop.
I've attempted numerous solutions, including reducing graphics settings (without success), installing an older graphics card driver, disabling vsync, setting frame rate to unlimited, and utilizing full-screen mode. I recently tried a patch intended to increase virtual memory for x64 platforms, which provided temporary relief but has since deteriorated.
The game now consistently crashes at the start of cutscenes, resulting in complete Steam shutdowns accompanied by these error codes: “create render target view failed can’t create d3d window” and “EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (3221225477), Error reading location 0xb51915ac”.
I conducted online performance tests using UserBenchmarks, yielding the following results: Game 107%, Desk 125%, Work 100%; CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600X - 91.9%; GPU: AMD RX 5700-XT - 108.9%; SSD: Intel 660p NVMe PCIe M.2 1TB - 267%; RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3000 C15 4x8GB - 66.4%; MBD: Asus TUF GAMING X570-PLUS (WI-FI).
I’m uncertain about further troubleshooting steps, as every attempt seems to exacerbate the problem. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have also attached a screenshot of the performance overlay during a recent crash, which may offer additional insight.

I suggest checking for any damaged files within the game installation via Steam; games can sometimes become corrupted.

I attempted that method, and it identified two problems within certain files, subsequently modifying them. However, it ultimately failed to achieve the desired outcome unfortunately. I had safeguarded the Steam file as a precaution, believing it contained my saved games—fortunately, this proved accurate, and I appreciate the provided link.
