Fixing the BSOD issue
Hey, over the last few weeks I've been experiencing a BSOD. It's taken me some time to figure out the cause, but the error code keeps showing as 'WHEA_UNCONTROLLABLE_ERROR'. When I play games, it happens either briefly or for longer periods. I checked the event logger and found entry 46 – it indicates a fatal hardware error. The component details point to a memory issue, with a machine check exception and a source labeled 'Memory Error'. The information suggests it might be related to BIOS settings or hardware problems. I've tried reinstalling RAM twice, updated graphics drivers several times, and even rebuilt my PC about three months ago, but nothing seems to resolve the problem. My build was custom-made around three months back, and I haven't done any overclocking. The motherboard is MSI B550-A pro, CPU Ryzen 7 5800X, 8-core GPU Gigabyte RTX 3060 Ti, 16GB RAM (32GB total) at 2400Mhz, with a 1TB NVME M.2 SSD. I really need your advice and guidance. Thanks in advance!
Do you currently have any performance tuning on your CPU or GPU? Consider removing them if applicable. Restore your BIOS settings back to their original state and, since you're using a Ryzen processor, attempt an update to help eliminate potential memory problems. After making these changes, execute a Cinebench multi-core benchmark for roughly 40 seconds to a couple of minutes while keeping an eye on temperatures—avoid letting it run for extended periods if you're reaching temperatures above 95°C. If your system becomes unstable during the test, it typically crashes within one minute. This may manifest as a soft shutdown, a system freeze followed by a reset, or a blue screen. Should the issue persist even after resetting BIOS and clearing BIOS settings, try physically reinstalling your CPU and individually test each RAM stick. If the problem continues, experiment with adjusting the CPU voltage in the BIOS and gradually lowering it by small increments (such as 0.1) to determine if this resolves the instability in Cinebench.
Thanks for reaching out, Jon. For your initial inquiry, I haven’t performed any overclocking on my components. From the moment I started, I’ve inspected all my PC hardware for any signs of corrosion or scratches and found none. After a fresh build, I swapped out the CMOS switch and reset the BIOS as you suggested. Currently, I’m running Cinebench GPU test and am halfway through; there are no crashes and stable temperatures, though I haven’t played a typical game yet to confirm. Prior to the rebuild, I also noticed DRAM issues and VGA lights flickering or staying on. This reinforced my decision to restore the system. I’ll keep you posted on any developments.
