Fixing Low Frame Rates in League of Legends
Fixing Low Frame Rates in League of Legends
Hello everyone,
I’m writing to you because I've exhausted my troubleshooting efforts and haven't identified the root cause of this issue.
I consistently experience a significant decrease in frame rates within League of Legends – dropping from approximately 150-250 fps to around 50 fps after my computer has been running for roughly one to two hours. After restarting, I return to normal performance with frame rates typically ranging from 200 to 250. This problem repeatedly occurs.
I’ve examined the temperatures and they are generally between 40°C for the CPU and 50-55°C for the GPU.
I've attempted a fresh Windows installation along with the most recent drivers, but this didn’t resolve the problem. I also uninstalled and reinstalled the game without success. Adjusting the graphics settings—low or ultra—has no impact; I still achieve only 50 fps in each case (frames are uncapped).
Furthermore, the 50 fps feels extremely sluggish and unresponsive, with noticeable image stuttering and a sense of lag.
I suspect a potential hardware malfunction given that the components are over three years old. Could you advise on possible causes? I’m willing to share logs if necessary.
Operating System: Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
System Model: Z97X-Gaming 3
Processor: Intel® Core i5-4690K
Memory: 8GB RAM
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960
Possible causes include overheating from the CPU or GPU, which accounts for why a restart temporarily resolves the issue; or the system is performing a background operation after the CPU has been idle for an extended period. Investigate both of these possibilities by running League in a window with Task Manager open, monitoring your processes, services, and temperatures.
Temperatures are sufficiently low to avoid thermal problems.
I performed a complete reinstall of the game and Windows, installing only essential software and excluding any programs that could operate in the background.
Additionally, a background process does not account for the fact that frame rates remain at 50 on both low and high settings.
