Hi there, Windows 10 had another issue this time—many USB storage devices were being labeled as Unspecified and shown with a generic icon. To resolve it, I used a specific guide for Windows 10 (version 1909 - 18363.476) and Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC (versions 1809 - 17763.86). The solution came from the Reddit thread at https://www.reddit.com/user/redredredredddd/ I followed these steps:

1. Navigated to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\DeviceMetadataCache\dmrccache and searched for the matching folder.
2. Avoided touching other folders that worked fine.
3. Disconnected all USB storage devices.
4. Opened Device Manager, enabled hidden devices, and went to the Hardware tab.
5. Uninstalled problematic devices under Disk drives and Portable Devices—only those with an unclear icon.
6. Checked the folder for incorrect .ico files on USB drives and verified the .xml file against the old control panel info.
7. After confirming the issue, deleted the suspect folder and rebooted Windows.

I noted that changing the setting to "No" in Device Installation Settings might have triggered the problem around November 7th (based on the file creation date). I also considered skipping the previous steps and just setting it to "No," though I haven’t tried that yet. For more details, check the Reddit post. Thanks for the help!

I first came across this yesterday. I tried overriding the icon manually using autorun.inf and set a custom icon via HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons. It worked perfectly. I’m hoping for a fix soon.

The autorun.inf file began functioning briefly, but then the system returned to the standard icon. Fingers crossed for a quick resolution soon.
