Fix a Repair SSD using Windows 10 on a USB drive.
Hi. I’m attempting to fix my Samsung 860 500gb SSD with Windows 10 using a USB drive and recovery software, but encountered an error after several hours. I tried the Startup Repair option, which didn’t resolve the issue and Windows still won’t load. I’m unsure if the SSD is faulty or if there’s a problem with my motherboard. I recently discovered a Windows 10 Recovery Repair disc from December 26, 2017, and hope it will still work if I try to repair the disk. Please assist. Thanks!
The Windows 10 OS on the disk isn’t loading or fixing itself properly when using software from a USB drive. The system also becomes very slow or freezes when trying to boot from the SSD or the USB repair drive. It’s unclear whether the problem lies with the SSD itself or possibly the motherboard.
Since this is a SATA drive, you can do the following to cut out potential problems:
Change the data cable
Change which port the SSD is plugged into
Put the SSD in a known working computer and see if it's working fine. At the very least, pull the SMART data from it using
CrystalDiskInfo
However chances are the SSD is on its way out and there's nothing you can do to fix it. At best, you should see if you can grab the data from it on another computer.
Thank you for the details. I might have helped cause the disk to fail by filling it up too often. With only 500gb, reaching capacity happened frequently. I plan to try Crystaldiakinfo on another machine and attempt to recover the files I need, possibly starting with Windows 11 on a bigger 2tb NVMe drive. I’m hoping this will get my PC back online.
CrystalDiskInfo will give you diagnostic details about your SSD.
It performs no additional functions.
