I’m being completely clear, I really don’t understand the different levels, achievements or gems. I just use Steam to play my games and that’s about it.

Well what I always keep on my steam profile is the 50+ games owned, which is actually 92 games owned. Then there is the 5 years old account badge. The only thing I played in 2012 was TF2 and it shows... TF2 is still my most played game with 800 hours even though I haven't touched it in ages.

I stopped earning badges once I reached level 35, and began selling trading cards (about £50 each since). I think I should have started sooner, since leveling on Steam doesn’t seem so useful.
