First time oc 5930k
First time oc 5930k
I had a 5930k and reached 4.6 before stopping due to uncertainty about voltage limits and long-term effects. I set the Asus mb to auto-voltage, began at 3.6 and increased until it hit 4.6, where the voltage was 1.305v. I believe this would only last about six months at that level.
Max Vcore for the 5930K is 1.3V. When adjusting your processor close to its maximum overclock, remember that a 100 MHz boost requires roughly a 50 millivolt rise (0.050) to keep things stable. If more than 70 millivolts (0.070) or higher is needed for the next stable 100 MHz increase, it indicates the processor is being overclocked beyond its limits.
Auto voltage tends to be higher than necessary for stability. Locate a stable OC with auto voltage enabled, then switch it to manual. Maintain the same clocks but reduce the voltage slightly and perform a stress test for a short period. Continue this process until a crash occurs and revert two steps back. For example, > 4.6 on auto at 1.305 stable but hot. Switch to manual, get 4.6, test at 1.295 and stress, it works. Proceed to 1.285, it works, then try 1.275, crashes, then 1.280, which works, and finally settle on 1.285.
Additionally, if the operating voltage isn't possible, you can simply begin with a higher voltage suitable for the CPU and gradually raise the clock speed, such as using an older CPU.
