Well 74c without overclocking is high. Raising the voltage and overclocking it could push it into the 90s, though this might cause damage. The CPU tends to shut down after around 90 or 100°C, depending on the model. This seems like my guess, not necessarily the truth. Is this your experience with stability or stress testing? If yes, then that’s the ideal temperature during overvoltage and overclocking. Be careful—start slow, maybe begin at 4.2GHz and adjust from there. Anyone with their CPU can advise on the right voltage settings. Good luck, friend!

The 74C is for stress testing. I understood that 5GHz exceeds what my chip can handle. At 4.9GHz with 1.32V it works, stays under 80°C, and meets all requirements. In games it's under 70°C. 4.9 is sufficient, though a bit disappointing not to reach 5. I’m okay with the trade-offs. 5GHz becomes unstable below 1.4 and feels too hot even with full cooling setup.

It's actually quite good, though 100 or 200MHz won't make much difference. It's still an extremely fast processor. Pair it with a strong GPU and run modern games at high refresh rates—it's amazing. I'd even consider boosting it to 4.8GHz and 1.25V. Do you have quick RAM available?

Talking about it, you definitely came out on top in the silicon contest—we're not sure if this person actually won or lost. Running at 4.8 volts is an incredibly efficient CPU. Such great performance and design!

I understand your setup and performance. The default settings were 1.35v, but you're running it at 1.20v, which still shows solid memory performance. You're capable of handling 3200mz CL15 at around 1.385v or more easily. Right now the system has plenty of capacity for your needs. In a couple of years you might upgrade to a 9900K, especially since the latest BIOS is already installed. I'm using a 240mm AIO with quiet pump and low fan speed (under 1000RPM). At 1.2v, my CPU stays at 68°C tops during intense online games like BF5 Conquest—currently running at 4.8GHz. Stress tests show 72°C under full load at 4.8GHz and 81°C at 5.0GHz with 1.32v.

Ram operates at 3000MHz, that's how I set up the system—managed it all on CL, couldn't choose parts myself. A 3200 would be better, but the only difference is a 200MHz gap, similar to my CPU with an RTX 2070 and a 1080p144Hz monitor. It runs smoothly. In games, the CPU stays under 65-70°C. I'm talking about AC:Origins or FC5, which actually need 8-10 threads. I could lower it to 4.8 at 1.25x, but I don't worry about longevity at 1.3-1.32.

I'm also thinking about a 9900K. Honestly, the 8700K is considered outdated now, so I won't invest in delidding or liquid metal just yet. I'll likely wait until the 10th generation or a Ryzen 3rd. At least the 360mm AIO will stay handy for a long time!

I believe it could make sense to purchase a used 9900K from someone nearby and trade in the 8700K. For now, games are running perfectly on 6c/12t OC Coffee Lake.

Yeah, 8/16t is nice but the truth is a ton of gamers have 4/8 still so devs won't make it run like shit on those... Yet. I wonder how much better temps are with a soldered 9900k... Not having to delid is worth part of the price premium when you factor in delidding tools cost money, liquid metal does, plus voiding the warranty. Makes $500 look like a decent price imo

The Asus board performs well, handling high loads smoothly. A 9900K running at 1.25v should work easily, and the VRM heatsinks stay cool under these conditions.
