Find ways to record video via FireWire on Windows 10
Back then I could easily record my MiniDV tapes using WinXP and Windows Movie Maker. Now in 2022 it’s quite challenging. I recently acquired a PCIe firewire card (a Chinese model from Amazon). After installing it, the IEE1394 driver was recognized for my new setup. Then I needed to install the older driver, but it initially crashed, displaying a blue screen when I first tried. After some research online and turning on the camera, I resolved the issue and successfully installed the driver. I was relieved it worked. Now I aim to record from my camera smoothly, but most programs freeze or crash. First, Vegas Video Capture worked once, but it would freeze if I started recording with the camera connected. If it functions, it’s very slow—about five seconds for the mouse to confirm OK. Then I tried VirtualDub; the camera appears, but previewing causes freezing. I also used WinDV, which is quite basic. Eventually, after a 10-second test, I got a video preview, though it dropped frames and ended up with a stuttering clip. After recording finished, the preview also failed. I’m struggling to get consistent performance. My system specs are solid: Ryzen 5 2600, 32GB RAM, GTX 1080, Windows 10 (latest). If I have to resort, I’d prefer removing the old WinXP or W7 machine and using it instead, but that’s not ideal. I’ve already checked many forum discussions, but I’m only able to test each program I find until something finally works.
Firewire has been less popular for quite some time, which explains why many drivers are being dropped. The safest option might be an older MacBook that works well with FireWire. Alternatively, you could use a capture card and connect it to your AV output, then transfer and edit the content afterward.
I understood that too, yet I chose to test it on a modern PC. The old driver functions for Windows 10, though some guides suggest Windows 11—probably per machine. My Macbook has Firewire 800, but I’ll need to reinstall the OS. Either way, I could link my slow XP PC, move data to an HDD, and then connect it to the current system. I also have a Hauppauge HD PVR capture card. Now I’m wondering if I should send back the Firewire PCIe card to Amazon—it works technically but lacks software support.
There are individuals offering used OS X on eBay, which seems like a smart move.
