It might not be about adblockers themselves. Many sites notice when you're using one and show ads in that spot to remind you to disable it. You decided to change your host file now.

I understand Adaware is preventing YouTube ads from appearing, even though I'm using an older version of the app. It could be something else at play.

Just noticed, I thought it was the wrong name—I meant AdAway. Do you use that too? No, it doesn’t block either the integrated ads or the video ads on my device. But I’m using the latest YouTube version. That’s frustrating because you can’t tap in from the left for subscriptions, which feels like a strange UI change. Maybe I’ll try an older version instead.

There are certain websites that seem problematic. The phones host file has been updated via AdAway. It’s likely all issues are resolved. You should be able to access the older YouTube versions without much trouble. I usually use the format "-appnamehere.apk" and find results easily on Google or similar sites.
