I notice many users altering Windows 8.1 settings and I'm starting to understand why. Although I appreciate the metro interface, the desktop feels too rigid for my needs. Earlier, I modified XP and saw my system become extremely sluggish afterward. Previously, I would start up quickly, but now even simple tasks like making a PB&J take time before I could boot. I'm curious if there are any Windows 8.1 modifications that wouldn't cause this issue, especially given my current hardware situation.

It's likely your computer performs better than yours, yet you might have experienced a slowdown after making these changes.

I don't feel the same way. I own lots of Rainmeter themes, personalized icons, and Start8, and Windows 8 starts quickly. By the way, I have an SSD.

Absolutely, your system performs much better with these upgrades. A 7200 RPM drive should definitely fit in without issues.
