I updated my hard drive and reinstalled Windows 10. I missed recording the activation key. Since licenses are now tied to motherboards, can I retrieve the key without it?

It operates fully on its own, requiring no manual steps. It identifies your computer upon reconnecting to the internet and starts it automatically. You can bypass the key entry during installation.

It’s happening because the system detected a change or conflict, even though you updated everything.

It seems you likely lacked the necessary license. With a valid license, Windows would have started activating automatically, unless significant hardware modifications were made—then it would prompt you to connect your Microsoft account before re-activating.

That's not feasible, I possessed a real license with the laptop. It was transferred during the Windows 10 free trial from Windows 8, and I didn't face any problems with activation for the five-year period I had the device.

Based on how laptop setups typically work, I think the key was linked to a Microsoft account. It’s likely it had one installed because most laptops come with extra software or malware preloaded, and having an account would have secured the license. If you forgot to set one up, you probably lost access unless you recall the email and password. Alternatively, it might not have had an account at all, so no license binding was possible.

He mentioned the situation clearly. You might want to log in with your Microsoft account if you have one, but if not or if it doesn't work, you won't be able to use it. You could either try without a product key, purchase a new one, or I won't be able to help with that part on this site.

I realized I had the wrong Windows version installed. My laptop came with Windows 10 home, but I accidentally added Windows 10 Pro. After reinstalling, it worked perfectly without any problems. Thanks for your assistance!
