What processor are you using at the moment? Unless your present CPU is exceptionally sluggish or you discover a solid offer, it might not be worthwhile given your outdated setup.

Core 2 Quad is the top choice available. You might be able to get a Q6600 at a lower price, or perhaps something better? In reality, you shouldn’t spend more on such a system. Even old electronics could offer more up-to-date machines. Check out schools or companies that are replacing their gear and look for discarded parts.

Consider testing the 771/775 mod with a quad-core 771 Xeon processor. However, it might be time for a full system upgrade. The X5460 is a strong option—3.1GHz stock speed, easily overclocked. It's unclear if your motherboard supports OC or can handle 771 CPUs. Regardless, it probably isn't worth the effort unless you're comfortable with the risks.
