I purchased Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 from Newegg. I possess the activation code, but there were no directions on how to obtain the actual code.

I figured it out.
The email from newegg only had instructions to redeem Xbox Live.
Only in the product description did it mention redeeming at microsoft.com/redeem.
The code was a gift code that closely resembled a Windows activation code.
It eventually got downloaded, but it took a long time—about 95 gigabytes.

When visiting the microsoft store or steam, the only available choice is purchasing the game.
I already purchased it from newegg and paid the cost.
I possess the activation code.
I reached out to newegg, which directed me to microsoft.
I spent the last two hours on the phone, dealing with unhelpful representatives who offered no progress.
I’m still searching for a download link for the code.

I'm not familiar with ms, but when entering codes in steam you don't visit the game's page, you access a menu at the top and select redeem code. The ms store could work similarly

you navigate to the product page in the Microsoft Store
you scroll down to "Digital Ownership"
you tap on it
the following screen appears
next screen allows you to input your code
