They're already operating in dual channel, so taking out one would lower performance.

It's usually best to maintain two RAM sticks and set up in a dual-channel mode. This means placing them in the two farthest slots from the CPU, not adjacent to one another. You'll see the sticks positioned apart rather than side by side.
