Hello everyone, my Asus B85 motherboard failed about two weeks ago after six years of reliable use. When the 8-pin CPU power cord is connected, the PSU appears to sense a short circuit. After disconnecting all components and using a multimeter, I didn’t get a low-ohm reading—just around 10 kilo ohms. It isn’t the power supply, the CPU, or RAM (everything checked). I’m trying to track down the cause but haven’t had much time.

Fortunately, a friend lent me an old PC motherboard: an MSI H81M-E34. The system is back online except it won’t shut down anymore. I’ve installed Windows 10 x64 drivers, updated the BIOS, disabled fast startup, and verified USB and fast boot settings, but nothing works. It keeps showing driver-related BSODs. The Windows integrity check passed without issues.

I’m considering replacing the motherboard again if this doesn’t work. I prefer not to upgrade now—switching from DDR4 to DDR5 is pricey, and my current hardware (except the motherboard) is fine. I’m thinking about purchasing a refurbished ASUS B85 or Z87 on eBay for at least another two years before rebuilding properly.

What do you think? Should I go ahead with a replacement, or would you advise against it? Also, what’s your take on the MSI motherboard problem? Thanks in advance for your help!
