Hello, welcome! I'm a new Sys Admin looking for guidance on upgrading servers. You're trying to move Windows Server 2008 from 2012 to 2016, but there are some licensing questions. From what I understand, you'd typically need keys for each version. Do you have to purchase a 2012 key first, then a 2016 one? Is it possible to upgrade directly to 2012 without activating it, and then activate again when you reach 2016? Also, if you consider buying a 2016 key and downgrading to 2012, would the downgraded key work on the older system, or would you need two 2016 keys—one for the downgrade and one for the upgrade? I'm also not sure if these machines are 2008 R2, which could affect compatibility. Let me know if you need more clarity! Thank you!

You can enhance them without licensing issues, simply receives a 30-day test period.

If it isn't the 2008 R2 version, you'll need to upgrade to 2008 R2 first, and then to 2016.

I understand your situation. If you move through those Windows versions and activate 2016 once, there should be no problems—just a single activation key for that version.

The process should function perfectly. The R2 upgrade was designed for a smooth transition.

Sure, I upgraded from the 2008 version to the R2 earlier, and it worked well. The support for older games was really good.

Thanks for the feedback. The server only supports basic functions like Exchange, Active Directory, and File Server. I’m not sure if an evaluation ISO can be used for upgrading regular retail software. You might want to check the Microsoft evaluation page directly.

I don’t understand, I’ve never worked with an evaluation ISO for an upgrade.
