Hey there! I'm setting up a new PC and researching memory options. I need about 128GB for music production and gaming. I considered a G.Skill 3600 CL16 kit, but it lists a voltage of 1.45V. I think the recommended voltage for memory on 5000 series chips is around 1.35V, so I might be overclocking it if I choose this path. There are similar kits like 3600 CL18 or 3200 CL16 at the same voltage, but I'm unsure how much slower performance would affect my setup. Any advice from someone experienced with memory would be great! Thanks!
Using any XMP profile is essentially overclocking. If it caused an issue, GSKill would sell them at a lower voltage.
Refers to a 3600 CL14 1.45V model? CL16 remains at 1.35V, which doesn't influence the CPU. The memory voltage stays the same regardless of CPU type. For other components like VDDP, stock settings are usually fine unless you're using 64GB or 128GB modules.
It's worth noting that combining two 64GB kits at CL14 might not yield the full 128GB capacity. The system may only recognize one 64GB module, so you'd need to verify the actual capacity or consider purchasing a single 128GB unit.
I only looked at kits up to 64GB because Samsung B-die supports 3600MHz CL16 at 1.35V, but they’re capped at 16GB per stick unless it’s taller than 50mm. For instance, the F4-3600C16Q-64GTZN 4x32GB at 3600MHz is already tough on the CPU, and combining two kits—even with the same model—adds another hurdle for XMP compliance.
3600 CL16 suggests that switching down to 3200 CL14 offers similar results, is more widely available, slightly cheaper, and performs almost the same. I don’t see any 4x32GB models for 3200 CL14, so it might not be an available choice.
I believed I spotted 3200 CL14 on pcpartpicker, though I'm not sure. 3600 CL16 looks promising too. These chips are basically the G.Skill Trident line, but do Neo and Royal really differ in performance beyond appearance?
