I previously shared some thoughts about my new build and came across a question. My motherboard, an ASRock A320m/AC, doesn’t come with a Ryzen 5000 chip (that’s something I already knew). It needs a BIOS update to version 7.2. Since I’m starting from scratch and not using an older CPU, I’m a beginner. I bought a Ryzen 5500 instead. My main worry is there’s no BIOS flash button or LED on the board, and I don’t know the current BIOS revision. Can someone help me update the BIOS without the CPU? Or find a way to check the revision without it? Any advice would be really appreciated. Thank you!

Without the bios flashback function, updating the BIOS isn't possible without a CPU. The BIOS version is only accessible inside the BIOS/Windows environment, leaving you in a difficult situation. I’d suggest trying to boot first to check for updates, and if there’s none, you’d need a compatible CPU to proceed.

I won't know until Christmas. I got all the parts except the GPU, which was a gift. The next 11 days are going to be tense.

considering an older board for a fresh installation can be a smart move. it might have been a solid used purchase or a hidden gem you found. if you go new, there’s no guarantee of availability, but it’s worth checking current listings.

Great offer on Newegg near $55 including tax. Thought about assembling it for Christmas with my new GPU, but I could have built it without needing it right now—just to get it back sooner. Super stressful deal! Finals begin tomorrow as well.

When options are unavailable, consider purchasing an affordable CPU with integrated graphics for flash storage.

I'm checking this out, but I'm currently struggling financially. I could buy a cheap Athlon for around thirty dollars if the BIOS doesn't support it. Maybe I'll just throw it away and save some money.

Sure, aim for a version with at least a 4th or 5th generation model, since the 6th is already available.
