Find a way to make the game work on Windows 10.
The wife and I both felt a bit wistful recently and wanted to relive the games we enjoyed as kids. We decided on Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2, but it hasn't started on my Win10 PC yet. I've tried compatibility settings for Windows 98 and XP, checked DirectPlay, and created a batch file with CPU core preferences. The game loads but then crashes right away—no signs it was opening properly. Anyone have suggestions on how to fix this?
Open the executable file, navigate to the compatibility section and check the unchecked option for WinXP, then click Apply and run with administrator privileges.
Compatibility mode rarely functions perfectly as expected... Starting an XP virtual machine could be worth considering, but it’s not just the support for GPU acceleration that’s lacking; you might also face problems because your newer GPU doesn’t match the game’s requirements. If this doesn’t resolve the issue, creating a dedicated retro PC might be the best path forward. For this title, most recommendations suggest using the PS2 version in pcsx2. With a powerful enough CPU, this is likely the simplest and most affordable solution. The PS2 version seems to include more content overall.
VirtualBox can mimic a GeForce 6800 when 3D acceleration is turned on. I'm not entirely confident about any strict minimum needs, but I think it works best on Windows XP and later. My trials with Windows 9x in VirtualBox have shown only basic support. Guest Additions help unlock many features.
