It's known as Windows To Go. More details are available at the provided link. Linus encountered issues setting it up on an SD card but managed to do it successfully.
There are several options available to generate a bootable USB 3 installer for Windows 7. Intel and Gigabyte both provide tools: Intel offers a download at https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25476/, while Gigabyte has instructions on their blog (http://gigabytedaily.blogspot.ca/2015/09...-7-by.html) and a direct tool link (https://www.gigabyte.com/Support/Utility...n+tool&p=1). If installing manually, you must first obtain the appropriate USB 3 driver for your motherboard’s controller and include it in your Windows 7 media before proceeding. A tutorial on this process is available at https://winaero.com/blog/how-to-install-...3-0-ports/. For NVMe M.2 drives, similar steps apply—add the necessary driver to your installation media. If you plan to use a newer CPU like Intel or AMD, consider installing the Windows Update fix from https://github.com/zeffy/wufuc. Additionally, if you’re purchasing a Windows 7 Ultimate license (around $5 on eBay), I have an updated ISO for June 2015 available here (just before Microsoft began adding invasive telemetry).
