Consider the trade-offs between Bitlocker and tools like Veracrypt. Both are strong free options, but they serve different needs. In situations where companies demand high fees for OS access while secretly handling your data, relying solely on Bitlocker might not fully protect you. The choice depends on what level of security and privacy you prioritize.

Veracrypt caused problems on my system, while BitLocker was simpler and lighter.

What concerns? I've never faced any major problems. Veracrypt offers better protection than Bitlocker and makes it simpler to maintain security. However, whole disk encryption on a GUID partition table often doesn't work. I usually stick to an MBR instead. GPTs aren't necessary in this case. Also, Bitlocker has hidden backdoors, especially when authorities ask for them. Microsoft's track record isn't reliable for security. For many years, open-source tools didn't support whole disk encryption. Last year changed when Veracrypt added GPT support. I tested it but it didn't work well. After each Windows update, Veracrypt would refuse to boot because Windows altered changes made by Veracrypt on the boot sector. Fixing this meant switching to Linux. Just using it on an MBR resolves everything. These problems stem from Windows and Microsoft, not Veracrypt or its developers.

EU law mandates transferring the keys, as it is merely an inactive product key placed on another computer. Usually re-activated through phone verification.
