I just upgraded a friend's old Windows 7 PC with an AMD Phenom II X2, 8 GB RAM, and a GTS 450. I'm wondering if switching to Windows 10 would actually help or hurt its performance on this older setup.

Verify all installed devices support Windows 10, then proceed with an upgrade if needed. Windows 7 remains adequate for most everyday activities, though certain games and programs might require Win10. (DirectX 12 titles, specific Microsoft tools, etc.)

Consider upgrading to Windows 10 cautiously. Instead, look for a W7 version and continue using it. I found a Vista copy on a Vista Forums user.

Windows 8 (not 8.1) is the latest release I’d set up on very old systems. Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 don’t support processors from before Intel Core.

In fact, it makes sense. You'll gain several security and reliability benefits along with slight performance gains. For regular tasks, you may notice a minor slowdown since Windows 10 comes with many features turned on by default, though you can turn them off if needed.
