Final fantasy games
The series began to decline after Final Fantasy X. I recommend trying games released before FFX-2. FFIX and FF Tactics are my top picks.
Start with the series in sequence but omit the third entry (5 is similar but leagues are better). To cover more titles, play from 4 to 9 while skipping 8. Likely, all major FF games from 1 to 10 are accessible on PSN now. Many early titles are also available on mobile as well.
These are my top picks from the 3D gaming period: Final Fantasy 7, 4, 7, 8 and the FF13 series. The SNES titles (4, 5 & 6) stand out as solid 2D experiences, while Final Fantasy 3 feels dated even after its 3D update. Overall, I’d suggest starting with the SNES games since their visuals look better today. A 3D remake of FF4 is also available, along with HD versions and sequels. For PC users without emulators, the recommended titles are FF3, FF4, FF7, FF8 and the FF13 trilogy. If you’re on iOS, you can play all 2D classics with HD remastered visuals, including the 3 and 4 remakes. Android availability is uncertain. On mobile, there’s a brand new 2D installment called Final Fantasy Dimension. For mobile playlists I’d rank: FF5, FF6, FF4 (3D and 2D options), FF4 trilogy, FF3, FF8. If you’re after more content, Final Fantasy 9 is highly recommended for its improved graphics compared to PS1 titles. The series also includes FF11 and FF14, the latter being a mobile MMORPG. FF11 is retiring from consoles but will remain accessible on PC and mobile. FF14 has been significantly improved over the years and is set for its first expansion soon. If you’re interested in multiplayer, FF14 offers a great online experience now that it requires a subscription.
@ Verne How do you enjoy FF9? Without Vivi I’d have really disliked it. @OP My top picks are FF6 (FF3 on SNES in North America), FF7 and FF8. FFX and FFXII had decent games, though many side quests felt forced and boring. I think the side quests in FF7 and FF8 were more connected to the main story or at least fun on their own. That said, I didn’t play as much as I played the blitzball in FFX or the triple triad and snowboarding in FF8. They’re all solid titles, but they’re quite old now. If you like different gameplay styles, storytelling approaches, and can tolerate the current graphics, start with FF6 and continue to the latest versions. I skipped X-2, 11, 13-2 and 14, so I can’t suggest those. And it’s fine if you skip level 9. I wish I had.
2D and 3D job systems: FF1, FF3, FF5, FF2, FF4, FF6
Non-job titles: FF2, FF4, FF6, FF12 (original), FF7, FF8, FF9, FF10
Note: Some entries may be outdated or dated.
