You're experiencing issues with your Linux Mint setup on the HP Probook. The boot menu is behaving unexpectedly, and you're stuck in a loop when trying different options. To ensure the EFI system selects "ubuntu" or the correct shim file by default, you may need to adjust the boot configuration. Check the UEFI settings for the appropriate path to the EFI files, especially focusing on the acpi>EFI directory structure. If you're using a custom boot option like "secure," verify that it points to the right shim file (shimx64.efi) and that the system recognizes it during startup. Consult the Linux Mint documentation or community forums for guidance on boot order and EFI path configuration.

After some time tweaking, I finally understood the problem. On the r/LinuxMint subreddit, the key was enabling the "Custom" boot menu and entering the text "\EFI\ubuntu\shimx64.efi" as the first choice. I also adjusted the Grub settings so the menu wouldn’t linger for too long. For anyone with an HP Probook or similar from that time, follow these steps: use the "Customized Boot" option and provide the correct EFI file path via "efibootmgr -v". I’ll share the relevant screenshots from the Reddit post for clarity. Spoiler alert!
