Since day one of using my i7 8700K, it’s consistently getting very hot even when running at default speeds. At full stock settings, it reaches around mid-70s during RealBench and mid-80s at 4.7GHz across all cores. I’ve installed two cooling solutions so far—a Kraken x62 and a Cryorig R1 Ultimate—both delivering similar outcomes. I’ve also replaced the power supply and upgraded the case layout. I’m using an offset voltage, and after several hours of benchmarking at 4.7GHz, temperatures hit a peak of 1.280V. This is higher than what I see for other CPUs online, making me question whether the TIM settings are the main issue. Before giving up, are there any further tests or adjustments I can make? It’s frustrating because I invested in a good cooler and unlocked the CPU to run stock, yet performance remains poor. If nothing changes, I might have to let it sit or consider upgrading.
The temperature is quite concerning, though powering it up to 1.280v seems to be the main issue. I started with a Thermaltake Core P3 open case, but moved to a Corsair 460x earlier this year. I’m using three 120mm fans front for intake and one 120mm at the back for exhaust. There were two large fans at the top as exhaust, but they caused airflow problems so I removed them. Your 8086k runs smoothly at 4.6 and 1.19v, reaching around 82 in Aida 64. You have two intake fans on the front and one exhaust fan. The hyper 212 Evo with two fans seems to be handling it well—your temperatures aren’t unusually high.
It's a recognized problem that leads many Intel users to lose interest. This was the most rewarding experience I've had. When I first received it, it ran at 4.8ghz with 1.35v, and with a basic air cooler, it would reach the upper 90s in Cinebench/Realbench. The A64 model performed better in the 70s, but it's significantly less intense. Post-delay, I achieved 5ghz at 1.365v (meaning higher frequency and voltage than before) and maintained stable performance within an 80c range in Realbench/cinebench and low 70s on A64. Frequency increased while temperatures dropped noticeably.
I thought that way. I mainly use the PC just for light gaming at 1440p, so I think leaving it as it comes should be fine. Even with an overclock, I doubt I'd see much improvement at this resolution.
I'd say you're doing well at 4.7/MCE. Those numbers don't reflect real-world gaming conditions. You'll see much lower values. For example, even when I reach the 80s in RB/CB, the game loads around 50-60c, right?
Same situation again. At 4.5Ghz/1.32v my 5820K could reach the 90s on my NH-D15S, but only when Prime95 was running. In everyday conditions it stayed in the 60s, even up to the 70s with heavy load. Normally you’d be about 20°C lower than your stress test readings (especially if you used Prime95 Small FFT). To actually hit that level you need very targeted and super demanding AVX tasks.
