Essentially I was attempting to upgrade from Z270 to Z390 (switching from i5 6600k to i5 9600k, six cores – great!) but it turned into a full cluster mess that eventually crashed. I’m sure Z390 won’t support Windows 7 (thanks Microsoft). After the loss and understanding, I replaced the motherboard with the new one and booted back into Windows 7, but it didn’t work properly – it wouldn’t load Windows at all, only BIOS. I tried some reconfiguration, but I have no idea what I did. I also had a drive named “VALT” for storing YouTube clips, and when I restarted, it didn’t recognize it either – code red! Please help me fix this.
You're right to be cautious. Moving a system with Windows 7 isn't as straightforward as just swapping drives. The drivers might not work on another machine. With Windows 10, the process is a bit different, though you might still need to reinstall. Let me know if you'd like more details.
A Windows 10 installation can connect to most other computers and handle new hardware drivers without issues. It might be a bit complicated sometimes and can cause odd problems, but it functions. It's not as smooth as a clean setup. Windows 7 would have struggled significantly with this kind of process. If you find another working system nearby, try connecting the drive externally (don't boot it) and check the available files. Probably a full reinstall is still best.
Mable didn't set up the "Valt" drive in the BIOS, which is why it doesn't appear. It's a WD blue drive with 2.tb. Thanks for the quick response—no one should have to pay for tech support when they're here to help!
You have three connected drives: the C drive, a V drive (not visible), and an M.2 SSD on the motherboard. The V drive now appears as a D drive with no folders, suggesting it was completely erased. It’s concerning that this happened unexpectedly—could you try recovering data or check if any logs exist?
Essentially, I made sure the SATA port is correctly placed on the motherboard. Ugh... that’s a bit embarrassing. Now everything is working, including the recovered files. Yay! I’ve also installed a new 4th drive to transfer data from the old C: drive to this new Q: drive (blank, 2TB). Western Digital Black—top-tier quality! Thanks to everyone who helped me. More like keeping my sanity than anything else.
It's time to shift to Windows 10. In three months, Windows 7 won't receive any updates from Microsoft and poses a significant security threat. Most developers will also stop supporting it soon. If you're hesitating about Windows 10 due to telemetry concerns, Windows 7 already addresses that issue—years ago.
You're wrong. I made that lot of times. It may sometimes be tricky and once or twice I must used Paragon Adaptive Restore to adjust os to new hardware, but in 90% of cases everything works. Even switched from core2quad to Ryzen 5 1600. Of course that change needs some adjustments sometimes, but it's still faster than reinstalling everything (depends on what someone has installed - for people who has only few games and internet browser, reinstalling system may be the same fast). Too many people says that "no, it can't be done", but almost everyone repeats that after other guys without check. About that end of win7 support - so what? I'm using still one computer with win XP in my work and have no problem. System installation date was about 12 years ago, meanwhile motherboard was changed, drive was changed to ssd (cloning) and the same system still works. I'm still waiting for that thousand of hackers that supposed to attack my XP. Unfortunatelly, like y2k problem, it never happend. If we're talking about computers, I think one of main problem with computer users is that they're afraid of unspecified problems, theoretical problems etc. Like "I strongly recommend reinstall Win10 if you're changing component xxx". Why? Oh, SOMETHING may be wrong and you may have SOME problems. I really hope I never meet any home repair crew that think similar - they'll probably suggest that I should buy again my own flat, take out all furnitures and bring them back. Just in case, because I bought new speakers and it's better to set everything again.
