Hi, your question is clear. When you perform a fresh start with Windows 10—such as a recovery, fresh start, or wipe everything—does the Downloads folder disappear? It seems the Windows.old folder typically gets removed after about a month. Since you can't access the laptop right now, I hope your sister can still locate the Downloads folder by checking other methods or contacting support.

Avoid formatting the drive during Windows 10 setup. Choose your SSD or hard drive, then click Next/Install. Once done, you'll notice a folder named Windows.old containing your personal files.

Thank you for your reply. After a fresh installation, she was pleased with the new laptop. Since we’re no longer at her location, she checked to confirm the download folder wasn’t deleted and wasn’t located in the Windows.old directory.

Clear all files then reinstall from ISO recovery. Bring system back online with a fresh setup while keeping your data safe. For Windows old folder, I found four copies on my laptop that remain after five years—still there, but I’ll need to organize them later.
