I recently assembled a new PC and transferred an HDD from my previous system. I'm using MPC-HC with the K Lite Codec Pack to play video files. Occasionally, playback pauses for roughly ten seconds before resuming. Monitoring through Task Manager and Resource Monitor reveals the disk activity spikes to 100% and then drops, matching the freeze periods. I've run CrystalDiskInfo and StableBit Scanner on the drive, but no problems were detected. The problem seems random in timing. I tried a much older HDD from around 2010, and it didn't cause issues during video playback. However, with the newer 2022 HDD, the issue started around the 1-minute mark of videos and continued for over an hour on longer films. This inconsistency makes it difficult to pinpoint whether the problem is just this drive or another factor at play. What I know for sure is that it didn't happen when the drive was installed on my old AM3 Windows 10 machine (Windows 11, ASRock B650 PG Lightning, firmware 3.06). CPU: Ryzen 7 7700, GPU: GTX 1070, RAM: 32GB (2x16 GB DDR5 6000), Storage: 1TB Kingston NVME, 4TB WD HDD (2022), PSU: BeQuiet 750W.

Could the hard drive be handling other tasks concurrently? (Checking for defragmentation)

Check Windows event viewer, you'll likely see events about the SATA connection being reset, typically when communication fails with the drive there's a wait for a timeout then the link is reset. Try to reseat / replace the SATA cable.

You're encountering warnings about resetting the system and a specific device configuration. This typically happens during device initialization or firmware updates.

I determined the drive was defective. I swapped it in for a SATA SSD, and the problem ceased to happen.
