I have a used ASUS laptop. The old HDD failed, so I’m attempting to replace it. Luckily, my school offers a free operating system. However, the notebook isn’t detecting the boot drive I created. Since I have a PC and additional SATA ports, could I connect the hard drive to the notebook via those ports? Is there a method to install the OS directly onto the external hard drive before reinserting it into the laptop? My PC runs 64-bit, the notebook is 32-bit, and the old HDD was Windows 7. I’m trying to set up 8.1.

Ensure you set up the bootable USB accurately. If not, consider using another flash drive.

The BIOS allowed a USB boot, yet it treated the USB drive as an additional hard drive.
