I was checking my computer for a backup of my iPhone 6 and noticed a large file called "NTUSER.DAT" taking up nearly 70GB. After reviewing it, I learned it's related to the registry saver tool, which shouldn't be deleted. I'm unsure of any methods to reduce its size, but I need to free up space on my SSD that's already nearly full. Any suggestions would be helpful?

They mentioned there are methods to reduce its size, though they didn’t clarify what those methods were. That’s frustrating—I’m only aware of one option (compression under "Advanced"), but I doubt it will be effective because the file is locked.

This includes your unique system details, which makes it risky to delete.

I concur with gabrielcarvfer. The registry supports storing binary files such as images. This capability was introduced in Windows 95 and 98 to allow quicker data retrieval than disk storage. Its adoption was limited because HDDs became faster, RAM remained costly and scarce, and handling it proved difficult. It was mainly intended for niche scenarios rather than general use. It seems you might have run a program that doesn’t utilize this feature, loading big images or files into it—possibly due to a registry write error. The NTUSER.DAT file typically resides in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER section and usually ranges from 5 to 6MB for most users, depending on installed applications and their sizes.
