I attempted to run Spec Ops and the game mentioned that D3DCompiler_42.dll was missing. Someone suggested reinstalling it. Could anyone assist? Thanks—just a note about the pirated version.

Check if it's a Steam title. In your library, right-click the game and select properties, then look for cache verification options. If not compatible, consider reinstalling or moving the .dll file to your game directory.

Steam provides all its games with required program runtimes to ensure they work correctly (for example: DirectX, C++ Software Redistributable, older titles like Fallout 3 need Games For Windows Live). After launch, Steam checks if the files are installed and installs any missing ones. If not, you can inspect your game files by right-clicking the installer and selecting 'verify game integrity'. If the game wasn't obtained from Steam, consider reinstalling it or searching for the file online.

The app failed to launch properly and displayed an error code. Clicking OK should close it.

Well yeah if it is pirated that dll could be the one that cracked the game, thus having a genuine one of that file might do that.
