I've been asked to repair a computer for a relative. They brought it to a repair shop, saying the CPU, motherboard, and power supply were damaged by a recent storm. They wanted me to find replacement parts so it could be fixed. I came up with a solution using the components they had available: a Ryzen 3 3200G CPU, an MSI A320M-A Pro Max motherboard, and a Corsair CV550 Bronze 550W PSU. I used the existing hard drive, some RAM, and tried booting it. The new RAM worked in my PC but not in theirs, while it also booted on their system. I’m unsure what’s happening and how to proceed.
The hard drive was connected throughout the entire session and started up using my RAM.
I remove the CMOS battery, I typically leave it out for five minutes or longer, unplug the PSU, and press the power button for a few seconds, then wait about five minutes after that it should be cleared.
Clearing the CMOS offers the highest likelihood of success. Otherwise, the motherboard’s BIOS might not be compatible with that CPU. You’d likely need a first-generation Ryzen processor or APU. If unavailable, reach out to AMD and request a free update.
