Feeling torn between using ThinkPads and considering a MacBook Pro
Hey everyone! The wife is planning to upgrade her Samsung GalaxyBook Pro soon, and we were discussing the options. Here are the three we’re considering.
Laptop 1:
Thinkpad P16v Gen1
AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 7840HS (3.3GHz) Processor
32GB DDR5-5600 RAM
NVIDIA RTX A1000 Graphics Card
1TB PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe M.2 SSD
16" WUXGA IPS Anti-Glare Display
2x2 Wireless LAN WiFi 6E (802.11ax), Bluetooth 5.3
Weight: 4.85 lbs (2.20 kg)
Operating System: Windows 11 Pro
Accessories: Secure Digital 7.0 Memory Card Reader
Laptop 2:
ThinkPad P16s
Intel Core Ultra 7 155H (1.4GHz) Processor
32GB DDR5-5600 RAM
NVIDIA RTX 500 Ada Graphics Card
1TB PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe M.2 SSD
16" WUXGA IPS Anti-Glare Display
Gigabit LAN, 2x2 WiFi 6E (802.11ax), Bluetooth 5.3
Weight: 4.01 lbs (1.82 kg)
Operating System: Windows 11 Pro
Laptop 3:
MacBook Pro 16" with M4 or M4 Pro CPU, base RAM and Storage
Usage: Frequent travel, writing papers, grants, and coding in R and Python. Not extremely demanding.
Battery Life: Should be excellent, though not the main concern.
Priority: Longevity and durability for travel.
She has some uncertainty about the MAC because of the OS, but I clarified it's not too bad. She previously had a Mac from 2013 to 2021, so the OS isn't a major concern. What matters more is finding something that offers good battery life and can handle her frequent international travel.
👍 For OP: Avoid changing the OS unless your wife asked for it!
LG gram 15" and higher with 32GB memory. These might be too much, but she’ll appreciate it.

I’ve tried the P series, but they don’t perform well. The HP options in this area are superior. For workstation laptops, it’s a bit excessive. Mac would be preferable if compatibility isn’t a concern. If the MacBook can handle it, it’s usually the best choice, though I’d also consider 14” over 16”. I’ve used both and found the 16” to be quite cumbersome, especially when traveling.
Examine the Lenovo thinkpad carbon X1 series.
They are lightweight with 400nit displays and a superb keyboard.
You can generally tailor one to your preferences.
