I intend to switch from the Ryzen 5 3600 to either the 5800X or the 5900. I’m still figuring out which budget motherboard to choose between the ASRock B550M Steel Legend and the MSI B550 Gaming Plus.
I'm setting up a 5900X build and chose the Asus Tuf B550 Plus. It hasn't been turned on yet. The M.2 drive is here today, and RAM should arrive tomorrow. I'm hoping to gather some temperature readings by week's end, since I plan to use an iCUE Commander XT for fan management that lets me track temps live. One tip was to avoid experimenting with cooling for a 5900—seems the 5800 would need similar handling. I opted for a Scythe Mugen 5 air cooler and added three fans from the Corsair 4000X case. If you already have an MSI graphics card, just use one RGB control suite to manage everything. I noticed MSI boards often don’t last very long—usually only 4 to 6 years on VRM setups without heatsinks like this one. Both boards you mentioned have solid VRMs, so adding passive heatsinks would be a good idea.
Personal take: ESDF works better than WASD when you have a big shift key; it places extra keys in the corners and keeps your hand centered on numbers 1 through 9 for quick weapon changes. The bump on the F key makes it super easy to return to ESDF.
What kind of motherboard do you have? How do you typically utilize your computer?
I utilize it for gaming and watching videos, maybe streaming later on.
Dog, I'm not sure what to say, but I looked at your profile and upgrading from a 3600 won't impact gaming at all. With 12 threads on 7nm silicon, you could stream right now and it would still be smooth. I'd save your money and if you really need something better, consider a faster GPU. That 3600 can handle almost anything available. I wouldn't want you to waste hundreds without seeing any improvement in frame rate.
I share Chronified's concerns about MSI problems. My current R7-1700 runs on an MSI B450M Bazooka, and because of MSI's support and their advice, I've been using the 5900X for roughly six months. When they mentioned that the B450M Bazooka can work with the 5900X, they also revealed that updating the BIOS to make it compatible could damage the board. This happened after the same board failed instead of functioning properly with a GTX1650S I upgraded a few years ago. I swear it didn't boot at all with its original GT1030 (which had an eight-core chip), only showing a VGA POST error each time I tried to start it. Eventually, it crashed and had to be sent back to MSI. It took about 35-40 days. Since they called themselves repair specialists, calling this situation nervous is actually kind of polite. Sorry, but I won't even think about buying MSI parts anymore. Edited March 6, 2022 by An0maly_76
I understand, I purchased this for PC gaming and haven’t used my console in a while. I’m focusing on getting ready for upgrades over the next few years.
