I’m switching to the Ryzen 3000 now, thanks to Black Friday. I snagged a good deal: the total comes to AU$749, which is roughly $500 USD. The MOBO was discounted about 55 AU below its regular price. Is this a solid choice? I spent a lot checking out the X470, but I wasn’t sure about its memory support. Most of the RAM I wanted wasn’t confirmed for XMP on those boards. My budget was up to 750 AU, and I ended up a bit over that when shipping was added. I might have gotten better RAM if it were available, but I thought I could overclock it to 3600 after installation. If I made a big mistake, I still have the chance to cancel it. Thanks!

You can simply update the BIOS using a USB drive on some MSI B450 models, or the MAX boards include the 3000 series BIOS. The VRM setup works well, but if you need enhanced capabilities, opt for faster RAM—this model supports 3600MHz CL16, while many boards run at 1800MHz CL18. RAM recommendation: G.Skill Ripjaws V 16 GB (2x8GB) DDR4-3600 ($116.60 at Newegg). PCPartPicker list available.

Memory performance remains similar between x470 and x570 models. The support is mainly a verified path rather than a major factor. The CPU plays a key role in memory efficiency. If the IMC matches expectations, you can achieve 600Mhz OC speeds with proper timing. The overall setup is solid. Switching to x570 isn't essential unless you require PCI-E Gen 4. The AM4 connector will become obsolete soon, and x470 boards should support 4th-gen Ryzen just like the x370 handled 3rd-gen. With the arrival of the 5th generation, a socket update will occur, making a motherboard necessary regardless.

Hmm. Maybe I should go to an X470 board then. There was one for a bit cheaper available. Is literally the only thing for X570 is PCIe 4? Memory really has no impact? I'm looking at this one as an alternative: https://www.umart.com.au/Gigabyte-X470-A...3545G.html I can ask them to flash the BIOS for me, so that shouldnt be a problem

Thanks for the feedback Main issue there is that I can't do a BIOS flash if the board doesnt have flashback. I'm coming from an i7 4770 and Z87 MOBO. Dont have access to any ryzen chips atm. I am pretty set on Trident-Z RGB ram tho, coz im a sucker for looks. There is an X470 board that I am looking at (reply above), which would probably let me shift my budget to get 3600Mhz CL16 RAM (Lower CL is better right?), but is that even worth it? Memory overclocking isnt too bad on Zen 2. Is the ram you recommended up there CL16 or CL18?

No CPU required for USB bios flashing—just follow the instructions and press the bios flash button on the MSI B450 board. The X470 models don’t offer USB bios flashing at a reasonable price, so I’d likely choose the X570 instead unless you have another method. The 3600mhz RAM is the best option I’d pick because of its cost. You can also attempt overclocking a 3200mhz kit, though a CL14 3200mhz unit might be priced similarly to a 3600mhz CL16.

Choose an MSI B450 MB or the B450M mortar max if available, paired with quicker RAM. Consider an aftermarket cooler like the Arctic Freezer 34 for a more aggressive overclock to 3600x specifications.
