Fallout 4 is designed as a standalone experience, so no prior Fallout titles are required. You can enjoy it without needing to play previous games.

It's in another place, which changes the narrative. It might include elements from Fallout 3 or New Vegas, but it shouldn't impact the main plot.

They differ only a little, aside from a few names and recurring jokes.

I suggest grabbing three or three new Vegas options. You’ll find really affordable choices that offer solid games. Instead of spending 60 dollars on a title you might not enjoy, try paying just 3 dollars to test it out first.

Fallout 3 and New Vegas unfold in the same universe yet at separate spots and times. It’s hard to predict exactly how much Fallout 4 will borrow from these titles. Still, I believe it will mostly nod to past experiences, perhaps making light of them. I think you’ll be fine overall. Fallout 4 seems likely to allude to earlier games in some way, maybe with humor—something worth experiencing 3 and New Vegas. They’re solid titles, but you might need mods to make them more enjoyable. I wouldn’t rush through them either; they’re large-scale projects that demand time. If you’re not up for that pace, Fallout 4 remains a solid starting point.

Generally, you don't have to. I didn't feel the need for it in Skyrim. There are some subtle clues from the previous title.

No. Most Fallout titles are designed for immediate play, though Fallout 2 may benefit from prior experience.

You don’t have to replay past matches to appreciate it—mostly you gain deeper understanding of the story and some recurring jokes and nods. The wiki gives you the essentials, but I’d suggest trying 3 or a new Vegas cheap if you want to experience them fully, since the two hours on Steam refund won’t cover the full scope of Fallout’s content.
