it seems odd, but perhaps the newer motherboard's PCIe slot fits the requirements more closely, whereas the older model had surplus power when needed. That might account for the difference.

That's quite odd, perhaps the new motherboard's PCIe slot is designed closer to the specifications, while the older one had extra power available when needed? That might help explain it.
