Failed to start or install Ubuntu on a Ryzen processor.
Hello everyone, I've just completed setting up my first PC and faced some challenges. The boot from the USB didn't work properly, it wouldn't start at all, and when trying to install Lubuntu it kept saying GRUB wasn't installed. On the other hand, the SSD I'm using boots fine on laptops. I'm also trying to install Lubuntu on an XPG NVMe SSD—should I be doing that? My system runs a Ryzen 5 1600 with 16GB RAM, Corsair Vengeance 2400MHz memory, and a PowerColor RX 480 graphics card. Thanks!
You just set up your system and also have a Ryzen 5 1600, everything is running smoothly. Which Ubuntu release would you like to upgrade to?
18.04 isn't starting up. 16.04 serves as the foundation for the Lubuntu installation that is launching, though it doesn't transfer to the SSD.
Universal USB Installer, also known as pendrive linux, unetbootin and Rufus didn't help. The 16.04 version that seemed to work was probably the first one. I don’t have any blank DVDs to test; unfortunately, I’ve had better luck with USB before. I could also try downloading a fresh Ubuntu image—I remember it worked once, but things change. I’m also considering Windows 10, though I’d prefer Ubuntu on that drive.
Are you considering starting a dual boot or do you currently have an operating system set up?
Set up Ubuntu on the SSD and consider a dedicated Windows partition. The drive was fully cleared and repartitioned twice—once manually and once automatically during Lubuntu installation—causing a grub error. Thanks for your assistance; I’ve been working on this for about eight hours today and will return tomorrow!
Ensure you get a solid rest tonight. Some users claim they simply reformatted the USB and re-downloaded the ISO once more. Also, verify for damaged sectors.
Hey, I've solved the problem. How, I will never know. Anyway, this is what I did: I created a Windows 10 medium and installed Win10. Then I downloaded Ubuntu 18.04 on that Windows install, plus Rufus. I then used a third stick (I'd used two before that both failed), this time USB 2.0, and there you go. Happily sitting here on my gnome desktop now! Thanks so much for your help!
