You're encountering an issue where the download only provides a compressed archive (ZIP or OVA) instead of a standard ISO image for Kali Linux. This can happen if the source is misconfigured or the package isn't properly formatted. Try these steps:

1. Check the official Kali Linux website or trusted repositories to confirm the correct download method.
2. Use a tool like `unzip` or `7-Zip` to extract the contents of the archive manually.
3. If you're using VirtualBox, ensure the VM is set up correctly and the ISO file is accessible.
4. Consider downloading the ISO directly from a verified source if the archive format isn't working.

Let me know if you need help with any of these steps!

I'm not clear on the specific custom image you're referring to. Using the standard Kali image from their downloads page is a common practice since they provide ISO files.

Are you certain you're not mixing it up with a torrent file?

It's the suggestion from offensive-security, though the one that installs the zip file is what you need.

I assumed the issue was with WinRAR, but upon verification it worked with ISO. Now I'm unsure how to proceed.

I checked the file extension, and it matches what you need. You have an OVF file, so you should either set up or add the machine in VirtualBox. At the top there are two options—Add and New—try them both.

The virtual disk is in a pre-made VirtualBox VM format. You can launch it using VirtualBox itself.
