Hey! Here are the details you shared:

- GPU: MSI GEFORCE GTX 1070
- CPU: Intel i7 6800k @ 3.40GHz
- RAM: 12.0GV triple channel DDR4 @ 1223MHz (note this seems off)
- Motherboard: ASUS X99-A II (Socket 2011)

Recent boot issues:
- First boot: system won’t start, auto shuts down
- Second boot (after restart): overclocking failed
- Third boot: works properly

Additional notes:
- A few months ago, PC wouldn’t boot at all. Help was needed to fix the motherboard’s RAM slot issue.
- Power cord problems were suspected; removing a RAM stick resolved it temporarily.
- Fans ran extremely loudly for years; iCUE case didn’t light up.
- Attempted fixes included disabling XMP, resetting BIOS, clearing CMOS, cleaning boot, etc.

Though the PC is nearly 10 years old, I’m considering an upgrade or repair to get it running smoothly and affordably. Thanks for your help!

You're not sure if the power supply unit is the problem. Have you changed the CMOS battery? It seems to be completely dead after ten years.

Since RAM operates at double data rate, the advertised speed is twice the clock frequency, meaning 1223MHz equals approximately 2446 MT/s—roughly what you’d anticipate. In the screenshot, XMP remains active, and because XMP is an overclock while the RAM doesn’t reach 2666 MT/s, it suggests the problem likely lies in at least one component.

I need to highlight that I previously disabled it because it didn’t have any impact when turned off.

It seems the system is likely failing during startup because of protection mechanisms. I’d test with another set of RAM to see if the issue persists. It could also be related to the motherboard, as it appears to no longer support multiple sticks.

Turn off the RAM overclocking, eliminate any overclocking warnings... maybe it will work. Possibly the CMOS battery could help, or the capacitors might be an option... CMOS is quite simple to swap, but capacitors seem unlikely to be worth the trouble.

Thanks for the support. I’ll swap the CMOS battery and reset XMP again tomorrow, then update you. Good luck!

Hey there! Thanks for reaching out. Life really threw a curveball today. I refreshed the CMOS and swapped it out piece by piece, but still hit the same problem—overclocking doesn’t work and it takes ages to start up. I’m pretty sure the RAM might be the culprit, though I’m not sure what’s causing it.
