Hello, please confirm if your message is correct. I’m trying to learn how to get my system running smoothly with 256 GB of RAM. I frequently work on high-resolution 3D projects using 3DS Max and Vray, and recently my 128 GB memory capacity has become a recurring issue that needs solving. My current configuration is:

PC1 – Workstation Intel i9-7940X, 4.0 GHz OC, Asus Prime X299-A, 128 GB DDR4-2133 Hyper X Fury (8 x 16 GB)
PC2 – One of four render servers: AMD Ryzen™ Threadripper™ 2990WX, ASRock Fatal1ty X399 Professional Gaming, 128 GB DDR4-2133 Hyper X Fury (8 x 16 GB)

Based on what I understand, I have two choices:

Option A – ECC RAM
I found a solution in a video by Matt Granger showing how to install an i9-7940X with 256–512 GB of Samsung ECC memory on a Gigabyte X299 AORUS 7. The video is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktum34xE...u.be&t=498

Option B – Non-ECC RAM

Which option should I pick? For PC1, Intel states the 7940X only supports up to 128 GB of non-ECC memory. But the video suggests otherwise. If you follow the advice in the video, ECC should be possible. For PC2, AMD doesn’t specify a maximum for the 2990WX, though memory controllers can handle up to 2 TiB (about 2199 GB). However, ASRock says the Fatal1ty X399 only supports up to 128 GB total.

This creates confusion—should I go with ECC or stick with non-ECC? I could replace the motherboard if needed, but it would be inconvenient. The ASUS Prime X299-A has been reliable, and G-Skill confirms compatibility. If you have any suggestions, I’d really appreciate it!

I don't think Threadripper or Skylake X will work well on RDimms. The motherboard and CPU should handle maximum memory capacity you have available. They might not reach the full speed rating, but 128GB across four modules shouldn't cause a problem.

Thanks! With 8 dimms on both boards, you should be able to run 2 x 128GB non-ECC memory, though performance might be reduced. Cheers!

Below their expected performance. Imagine purchasing four units of 3200mhz 2*64gb kits (likely the most affordable option) and they might only operate at around 2933mhz. You can use standard ECC memory modules, though they must be non-RDIMM. Then again, you probably won’t need to deal with bit flipping much. It’s incredibly uncommon to encounter DDR4.

I'm targeting a 256GB setup. These Gskills links are the only options available in Denmark at 3200mhz. I have two 4*32GB kits at a fair price, but the 2*64 are sold out. I'm ready to try them! Appreciate your help, GoldenLag.
