Extremely slow SSD performance, consistently at 100%.
Hi everyone. I encountered problems with an SSD I purchased a while back when upgrading a machine from a 500GB to a 1TB model. It came with a 1TB model instead. I opted for a budget Silicon Power 1TB SSD, but it consistently showed odd performance behavior. When not under heavy downloads, it runs smoothly and feels responsive, but during active usage—especially file transfers—it slows everything down significantly. After removing the drive from the PC, it requires extensive updates. Since turning it on, the drive has stayed at full capacity most of the time, and system responsiveness remains poor. Read and write speeds are only around 2–3MBps according to HWMonitor, which is likely limiting performance. Task Manager sometimes reports response times exceeding 1000ms. Could this be due to a faulty drive, or am I missing something in the setup? I haven’t seen anything like this with other silicon power drives I’ve owned before.
I purchased several units from Amazon and they all stopped working one after another. If you're still within the return period, send back the SSD for a refund. These controllers are so inexpensive that they fail prematurely before the warranty expires. I'm unsure if they're low-quality parts or counterfeits, but avoid Silicon Power and Crucial on Amazon. After replacing the failed ones with WD blue drives, they're still functioning properly without issues at a similar cost to the cheaper SP models. Good luck!
Typical for a vehicle that’s showing wear or was made with lower standards from the start. (Or possibly both.) Just because you spend more doesn’t mean it’ll stay reliable—overall, you receive what you pay for in technology.
