In the last week I've noticed unusually high temperatures on my 5950X/1080ti setup. During light gaming sessions after a few hours, the system often throttles severely, showing readings as high as 90°C even though utilization stays below 10%. Sometimes it takes all day for this to occur, and other times it shuts down entirely due to over-temperature alerts. Today it won't even boot at all during the BIOS phase because of this overheating. I've checked cables, re-seated the CPU, cleaned the cooler, applied new thermal paste, and tested the coolant flow—one tube is warm while another feels cooler. The BIOS and monitor indicate the pump spins around 3400 RPM, suggesting it's still operational. I'm unsure what might be causing this overheating. Could there be an air bubble in the pump? I've tried various troubleshooting steps but haven't found a clear solution. My current setup includes the 5950X, Lian Li Galahad 240 cooler, and a system I got from my father last year.
TL;DR: It seems like a cooler version of something is in question. A few points to think about (but the issue lies with the AIO): Has it been doing this since you purchased it? Is it running at overclocked speeds? Does it get hot if left on the BIOS display? Have you confirmed the pump was actually spinning at 3400 rpms when it overheated? The pump might not maintain that speed. This is likely hard to check since others on Reddit reported pump speeds that should have been normal, yet cooling didn’t work.
It hasn't happened recently, only a short time ago. Everything seems to be stock and it gets hot quickly when you enter BIOS. Not sure if it will actually spin at 3400rpm after a long idle or if it slows down when turned on. I plan to run tests using an air tower cooler I have at home. Unfortunately, I don’t have any AM4 parts left to test, so I can’t confirm if the issue is with the CPU itself. It seems it might be something else.
Dreamhack San Diego is launching soon, and sometimes replacements take a month. I might go ahead and buy a new one just in case. I haven’t used a Lian Li before getting this system—if it’s not working, an AIO already didn’t impress. Probably their RMA process could be worth checking out. I haven’t seen any failed Corsair units before, so maybe it’s normal for them to stop working temporarily. I wonder if a cold plate getting super hot is common? After trying fixes and taking off the board, it often feels very warm to the touch.
Confirmed the cooler is working. Followed the instructions about using gravity to lower the air cooler. Current temperatures are 52°C in the bios. Sorry for the high speed—restarted the BIOS earlier as a precaution.
