My Intel i7-9700 CPU has been experiencing unusually high temperatures during gaming sessions. For instance, while playing Stray—a game that demands significant GPU power—I kept the CPU temperature consistently above 100°C with less than half its capacity being used. I’ve included a screenshot to illustrate this situation. As a result, I’ve had to cap its clock speed at around 3.5GHz (where temperatures hovered between 80-90°C), instead of the previous 4GHz setting. This adjustment has noticeably affected performance, particularly in CPU-heavy titles. Although my CPU is nearly four years old, I’m uncertain about how long this issue has persisted. I first noticed these elevated temps around six months ago while testing a game and observed them to be quite high. To address the problem, I applied some thermal paste approximately three months ago and re-applied it recently. This reduced the temperature by roughly 5°C during gaming (from about 95°C), but after a month it returned to consistently over 100°C. I’m using the original fan that came with the CPU, which activates at speeds above 80°C, yet this hasn’t resolved the issue. I don’t think the cooling system as a whole is faulty, since other components like memory and the GPU stay within normal ranges (~75°C for memory, ~50-60°C for GPU). Still, I lack sufficient expertise to confirm. Am I simply reaching the end of my CPU’s lifespan, or is there another problem with the cooling setup? I’m considering replacing it now, as it’s already limiting performance on my 9070 XT, but I’d appreciate some guidance before making a significant purchase.

Overheating with the stock cooler is a common problem for the Intel 9700. Many discussions and threads address this issue. Upgrading to a new CPU cooler should resolve most concerns. You don’t need to spend excessively—choosing a cooler like the 26 dollar Cooler Master Hyper 212 Black can significantly improve performance. Alternatively, opting for a higher-end model such as the Peerless Assassin SE120 offers better longevity in future builds.
Avoid overcomplicating things with costly coolers. A standard Cooler Master Hyper 212 can comfortably manage a 9700.
