Hey everyone, I've been attempting to capture some gameplay with FRAPS, but it's really poor quality. The resolution was only 1440p, not the 4K I hoped for. It ran on Runescape NXT Ultra settings, and the file size was just 3-4GB for just 30 seconds of video. Might my hard drive be too slow for this kind of recording? It seems like it needs a minimum write speed of around 100 to 133MB/s. My setup includes an i7-6700k, GTX 1080, 1TB HDD, 7200rpm drive, and a 250GB SSD. By the way, I also tried recording to my SSD and got smooth 60fps gameplay.

Yup above is true, Fraps can cut your frames in half. I've had the paid version for years I used it before there were any other decent software alternatives. As said use shadowplay.

FRAPS isn't the best option for game recording. Dxtory offers a 30-day trial and supports higher resolutions, though it has its own issues. An HDD can also be problematic. It's recommended to opt for a high-capacity SSD for better performance.
