I wondered which adjustments really change performance the most, especially since none seem to have a big effect on me.

Only the display range matters.

Looking for your PC's specifications? You might want to download OptiFine and turn on "multicore rendering" if your CPU isn't powerful enough.

I own a solid CPU with four cores at around 3.5 GHz. The AMD model isn’t a big concern. For graphics, I’m installing my very first card, the 6770, which seems to be limiting performance. That brings up another thought—should I invest now or hold off until I can afford a completely new system?

6770 isn't terrible but it's not exceptional either. Minecraft runs quite heavily on the single-thread CPU, so your processor might be the limiting factor. Using OptiFine can improve performance by enabling multi-core rendering, which should help if you have a weaker CPU such as a quad-core AMD or Intel Core 2 Quad chip.
