I think the issue might be with the drive. Consider disconnecting it and check if the problem resolves.

he executed crystal mark and it confirmed pass based on an earlier discussion, which makes me question if the hard drive is the issue. likely it became damaged following a failed update.

It only displays SMART data that may suggest a problem, but isn't always accurate. It acts more like a real-time alert than a complete inspection. The 99% health rating comes from calculating things like usage time and writes, which doesn’t really give clear insights. I’m not sure how to properly test an SSD thoroughly. With an HDD you’d run a surface scan, but not on an SSD. Ideally, just unplug or remove it if you can.

It's an SSD I recently purchased that caused the issue. The event viewer indicated WindowsInternal.ComposableShell.DesktopHosting.dll was responsible for explorer.exe crashing, as shown in the image below. I had to elevate system32 permissions to replace the DLL with a functional one. I obtained it from dllme.com, naturally doubting its quality, but it resolved the problem. Now I must restore the original permissions because it poses a security risk. Thanks for your assistance!

as mentioned before, using CDM is uncertain at best since it merely processes the SMART data which itself has some issues... maybe? that’s what I meant by “where do you get it”... a questionable site at most, not something I’d suggest personally, though nice to have it working again and hoping it’s secure... have you uploaded the DLL to VirusTotal? that would be the bare minimum for this approach (though I wouldn’t go that far since I already have backups)

I checked it without using Virustotal, but I ran it through Avast for a second look. Now I'm sending it to Virustotal for further analysis.
