Absolutely, here it goes—completely unpolished and full of skepticism.

In my view, the main problem isn't just games—it's the internet as a whole. Folks often say or do things they wouldn't in real life because they think they're anonymous. For example, the reactions to female presenters on YouTube comments are really unpleasant.

These spots are difficult to locate since few truly care about the details... except for a small group who pay attention. Regarding in-game figures, I believe immersion isn’t hindered by a character not mirroring your own—games usually serve as an escape, and players aren’t necessarily aiming to embody themselves. Even if they wanted to, expecting instant disinterest from anyone whose lead doesn’t match them would be unrealistic, especially since most titles (with non-customizable avatars) still appeal to a broad audience. For me, it’s more about comfort than identity; I’m not an Indian woman nor a British man, so playing those roles feels natural. It’s also worth mentioning that authors naturally focus on what they understand, which isn’t inherently negative; forcing diversity for the sake of it can result in oversimplified portrayals and the impression that characters are merely checkboxes. As for streamers facing harassment... regrettably, some people still view making sexual advances toward a streamer solely because she’s female as acceptable, though this isn’t the norm. On the flip side, certain female streamers choose to broadcast in revealing outfits, while males rarely do so—this doesn’t justify the viewers’ reactions, but it doesn’t excuse problematic behavior either.

It's a harsh reality though—though not all female streamers do this, a significant number do. The streamer @Anjelllo is linked in the second photo; she’s a former model who streams and draws attention by displaying her physique while clearly struggling with gameplay. I personally watched her play League of Legends and found her performance extremely poor. This supports my argument (to some extent). I actually spent nearly two and a half hours watching various streamers—Sky, Kaceytron, Total Biscuit, Destiny, SivHD—discussing those videos and the broader issue. At the time of the Sky stream, there was a live audience of around 35,000 viewers. It’s a lengthy video, but it’s worth watching.

I've never grasped the concept of "diversity." I don't believe every race, nationality, and gender needs to be included in every part of life. White men don't get upset because basketball is mostly played by African Americans. And women stop crying loudly for more female leaders when they realize plumbers are mainly men too. Why is everyone so uncomfortable? If it's about stereotypes or oversexualizing women, I understand it better. But as mentioned before regarding Twitch, most women aren't exactly great role models.

Are you affected by the absence of female characters without a sexual focus? Do you perceive gaming culture as male-centered, which might deter women from participating?

Hey, take a look at yourself. You're contributing to the issue.

I've never faced any problems with my gender, but I play for myself and don’t stream. Honestly, I think those girls who stream just because they’re female are really annoying—they always focus on their looks instead of the game. Spoiler: it’s a common joke. To be honest, I don’t enjoy talking about CS:GO matches; my team usually cares more about me than the game itself.

I'm not trying to be part of the problem. I'm not a female, do I can't say it is an issue it not. I'm asking because I figured I could get some feedback from active gamers instead of what researchers and NY Times has to say. You automatically assume I'm some extreme liberal or conservative on the topic. I have to do research and give a speech about any topic relating to "Justice," so.. since I DGAF about the mainstream media pages about social inequality and other issues, and have used up other topics on other speeches, I might as well try to find something related to a topic I care about. So, that's why I'm asking. I'm not trying to be part of the problem, I'm trying to get the understanding of the people who actually play games, not the people who use these issues for financial gain... So if you're going to try and criticize me, keep it to yourself because that's not the point of this. The point is to see if anyone had something productive that might add to my understanding of the topic and conversation. Either bring something to the table it stop trolling.

I understand you're responding to another person but felt it's worth sharing your perspective. Most of the titles I own don't feature sexually explicit female characters, even though some players might have different views. Generally, character differences seem linked more to the genre I enjoy rather than personal experience. Here are my listed games in quotes. I also play relatively few PvP matches and always keep my microphone off. In most competitive games, chat communities tend to be too harsh for voice communication. Spoiler: KSP (where the central female character stands out) Skyirm (with its chilly vibe and flexible gender options) CIV 5 (results are similar whether you play as Gandhi or Elisabeth I) Borderlands 2 (some quirks but nothing offensive) Portal (the antagonist is a woman, and she can be quite intimidating) TF2 (Pyro could be female? Life feels interesting—both main and secondary roles can be women, maybe even a lesbian character like Chloe?) I believe sexualization and similar issues appear only in certain games and are often greatly exaggerated when they occur.
